‘Hostages’ is an Israeli television series and best described as a taut thriller. The series is about Yael, a surgeon who has been told to kill the prime minister during a routine surgical procedure or else her family will be killed.
First off, what I loved about the series: Yael’s character. Quite simply, it’s a breath of fresh air. Cool, calm and incredibly quick-witted under pressure, she demonstrates an intelligence rarely accorded to female actresses or women in film (or television).
The premise of the series is simple enough. However, what pulls it off is the complex relationship between the kidnappers and their victims. Shifting loyalties, budding attractions and the realisation that, somehow, all is not as it seems on the surface (are they ever?).
My gripe is the big reveal; the reason why the kidnappers wanted the prime minister killed. For such a powerful, practically faultless television series, I felt it was too weak, too sappy and even a little bit annoying. I expected more. But don’t let that fool you. Rent the movie or buy the DVD. You won’t regret your night in.
